Of all the places I have traveled to or been to, my favorites are the wild places. Wild nature is extraordinary - both intimidating and inspiring. It is less encumbered by the forces of man – civilization, infrastructure, invasive species, fences, man himself. I feel so privileged when I can witness the playful interaction of a mother leopard with her teenage son or see an undisturbed field of trilliums. I strive to be noninvasive.

In my photography, my goal is to capture the essence of my subject. I like to investigate a subject, examining different perspectives, angles, and vantage points until I find one that speaks to me and reveals the object’s inner beauty. I don’t always succeed in capturing it, but I always try.

It is not the external appearance but rather the internal character that belies an object’s spirit. My photography seeks to glimpse the summation of the experiences and memories of an animal or a plant or a scene – the scar on a tree trunk where a bear clawed it, the plant clinging to life through a crack in a wall of rock, the hurried waddle of a penguin walking through the snow with a small rock in its mouth destined for a nest. How I frame, compose, and interpret the scene before me through the camera is informed by my own history and experiences – my respect for nature and its forces, my need for solitude, my sense of beauty, awe, and empathy.

Photography is my passion and my joy. I hope as you approach a photo you, too, can find some affinity with it; can find something that speaks to your spirit.
